Rwanda’s gemstone sector produces high-quality precious and semi-precious stones found primarily in the Southern and Western provinces. These gemstones—including Amethyst, Sapphire, and Tourmaline—are often extracted from pegmatite fields and secondary alluvial deposits. They are increasingly being

Amethyst: Highly prized in Rwanda, these are found in vein-type deposits. Rwandan amethyst is known for deep, reddish-violet hues that shift to intense bluish-purple in daylight. Sapphire: Primarily found in the volcanic regions of Rusizi and Nyamasheke (South-West). These are often alluvial and are known for deep blue saturation, though yellow, orange, purple, and green varieties also occur. Tourmaline: Frequently occurring as a by-product of 3T mining (coltan/cassiterite), Rwandan tourmaline comes in a wide spectrum, including green, blue, pink, and the more common black (schorl). High-clarity, transparent specimens are faceted for jewelry, while others may be cut into cabochons to display chatoyancy (the "cat's eye" effect). Other Gemstones: Small quantities of Zircon, Beryl, Topaz, and common Opal are also identified in various districts, often sourced from river gravel deposits.
